Japanese Koishiwara / Fushina Style Large Mingei Flower Vase from Japan 168 5.24

This is a large folk-art flower vase / decorative tokkuri-shaped vessel believed to have been produced during the height of Japan’s Mingei movement, around the 1950s to 1970s (Showa 30–50s).

The overall appearance features warm natural tones of ash glaze to amber glaze, accented by bold iron-painted abstract floral motifs. The thick and practical form reflects the utilitarian spirit of Mingei pottery, while its calm and rustic atmosphere strongly conveys the traditional Japanese concept of “beauty in everyday use” (yo no bi).

The piece has a substantial weight and strong presence, making it highly suitable as a floor alcove display object or as a large flower vase. Even without flowers, it functions beautifully as a standalone sculptural object with a distinctive atmosphere.

Although no clear kiln mark or signature has been identified, the style of decoration, clay character, and glaze suggest possible connections to regional kilns influenced by the Japanese folk craft movement, such as:
