Japanese Natural Whetstone Osukiyama Lv.4.5- 508g from Kyoto Japan

Description

This is a natural finishing stone from Osukiyama Tomae, in the compact “100” size, offering exceptionally attractive characteristics for razor finishing applications.

Osukiyama is an extremely rare lineage of Kyoto natural stones that is seldom seen on today’s market. It has long been known among natural whetstone enthusiasts and craftsmen as one of the more elusive and respected sources. Due to the limited amount originally quarried, combined with the steadily decreasing availability of well-preserved vintage stones, high-quality Tomae-layer examples have become increasingly difficult to obtain.

Although this stone belongs to the relatively hard category at approximately Lv.4.5-, it is not excessively glassy. Instead, it offers an excellent balance between refined cutting ability and smooth blade travel across the surface. For razor applications in particular, the use of nagura is highly recommended, as it produces a dense and stable slurry capable of delivering a smooth yet highly precise edge finish with excellent clarity and refinement.

At the same time, the stone remains comparatively approachable even for direct honing without nagura. It gently refines both jigane and hagane while creating a calm luster and a transparent, elegant finishing surface. Despite leaning toward the harder side, the sharpening sensation remains lively and expressive, allowing the user to enjoy the quiet and refined feedback characteristic of vintage Kyoto Tomae stones.

The stone surface displays a soft pale yellowish asagi to yellow-gray coloration, giving it a calm and understated appearance. Beautiful areas of natural skin (kawa) remain on the sides and back, adding to the scenery and dignified atmosphere unique to vintage Japanese natural stones.

Though compact in size, its elongated shape pairs especially well with razors and smaller precision blades, making it highly suitable for delicate final finishing w

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured size are not accurate. This is a life time investment for people who lives sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.”
