Japanese Natural Whetstone Shohonyama  Ozaki Hard Kiita 580g for razor

Description

This is a hard-type Ozaki Kiita natural whetstone suitable for everything from regular knife sharpening to razor finishing.

Ozaki has long been regarded as one of the respected Kyoto natural stone regions among razor users and craftsmen alike. In particular, harder and finely structured examples are known for producing exceptionally sharp, clean, and refined edges.

This particular stone is a very old piece acquired from a closed traditional barbershop. It was carefully stored and used for many years in an actual barbering environment, retaining the atmosphere and character of old Kyoto natural whetstones that are becoming increasingly difficult to encounter on today’s market.

The stone features a calm yellow-toned Kiita coloration with a very fine and consistent structure throughout. Although relatively hard, the sharpening feel remains smooth and controlled, producing an extremely fine, delicate dark slurry. For razor finishing, it has the ability to refine the edge without excessively rounding it, resulting in a sharp, crisp, and highly transparent edge character.

It also performs beautifully on kitchen knives and smaller edged tools, particularly for creating elegant kasumi finishes with strong contrast between the core steel and jigane.

This stone possesses the calm sharpening sensation and distinctive “quiet fineness” often associated with older Kyoto natural stones. Combined with its history of use within traditional barber culture, it can be considered a highly collectible and historically evocative piece.

A faint lines can be seen on the sharpening surface. However, during testing, they caused no noticeable change in sharpening feel, and no scratches were observed with the naked eye. For those who wish to be extra cautious, I recommend thoroughly lapping the surface before use.

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured sizes are not accurate. This is a lifetime investment for people who live sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.”
