Description

This is a Shohonyama Ohira Suita, mined from the renowned Ohira mine in Kyoto, one of Japan’s most celebrated sources of natural whetstones. Today, high-quality Ohira material has become increasingly scarce, and stones that combine generous size with excellent stone quality are becoming progressively more difficult to encounter.

One of the first things that stands out about this stone is its beautiful beige tone with subtle greenish hues throughout. Its naturally nuanced appearance gives the stone a distinctive depth and character, reflecting the timeless beauty and presence of vintage Kyoto natural whetstones.

The stone has a well-balanced, moderate hardness combined with excellent cutting power. During test sharpening, a fine, smooth black slurry developed quickly as soon as the blade contacted the surface, creating a pleasant, cushioned sharpening sensation. Unlike extremely hard finishing stones, it provides a gentler feel against the blade and is relatively approachable even for those who are less experienced with Japanese natural whetstones.

The resulting edge is not simply highly refined; it retains just the right amount of toothiness while achieving excellent sharpness, making it particularly practical for everyday cutting performance. It is well suited for the final finishing of kitchen knives as well as a variety of other edged tools.

Returns Policy
