Tozawa Whetstone – Vintage Japanese Natural Stone from Gunma, Japan

This is a vintage Japanese natural whetstone from Tozawa (Toisawa), Nanmoku Village, Gunma Prefecture.
The stone still retains its original quarry sticker, indicating that it dates back to the period when Tozawa whetstones were actively distributed.

Historical records indicate that quarrying in the Tozawa area began in the mid-16th century, and during the Edo period these stones were supplied as official whetstones for the Tokugawa shogunate.

In use, the stone exhibits a consistent internal density while remaining on the softer side.
A sticky, smooth slurry is generated quickly, providing comfortable and stable sharpening feedback.
Its behavior is predictable and easy to control, making it well suited for medium sharpening work and for preparing an edge before moving on to finer stones. Also, this whetstone can potentially be used as a Kaisei for sword polishing, and it is considered well suited for sharpening the area around the shinogi during the foundation (shitajitogi) polishing stage.

Tozawa whetstones are no longer quarried, and examples retaining their original quarry labels have become increasingly scarce.
This stone represents not only a practical sharpening tool, but also a valuable piece of Japanese whetstone history.

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured sizes are not accurate. This is a lifetime investment for people who live sharpening their knives, razors and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions

Returns Policy
