This item was purchased by us from a Japanese university professor whose family was moving. Previously, the professor lived with his parents in two households, so we purchased fair a few of Japanese tableware from the Showa period (AD1926-1989) In goos condition. Tsuruji Matsumoto is a renowned kokeshi doll craftsman from the Togatta style, which originates in Miyagi Prefecture. The Togatta-style kokeshi are traditional dolls mainly crafted in Togatta Onsen, located in Zao Town, Miyagi. These dolls are characterized by their simple yet distinctively powerful expressions and forms.

Tsuruji Matsumoto is known for preserving the traditions of Togatta-style kokeshi while also introducing his own unique touch. His kokeshi dolls are often noted for their large heads, which give a sense of weight and gravity, and for the detailed craftsmanship seen in their fine features. The heads often stand out due to their shape and expressive faces, while the patterns on the bodies are carefully designed, exhibiting simplicity but also a strong sense of beauty.

Matsumoto was active as a kokeshi craftsman from the early to mid-20th century, and his works remain highly popular among enthusiasts. Returns Policy
