This is a beautiful Hideriyama Renge Suita, a natural finishing whetstone from Kyoto, Japan, combining distinctive Renge patterns with a dense, firm, and refined stone structure.
The sharpening surface features a pale creamy-white to soft yellowish-white base, with delicate yellowish-brown and subtle reddish lines crossing the surface in intricate natural patterns. One of the most distinctive features of this particular stone is that the characteristic reddish-purple Renge patterns are more prominently visible on the sides than on the sharpening surface itself. These beautiful reddish markings extend across the side surfaces in layered formations, revealing the rich coloration and fascinating geological character unique to Japanese natural whetstones.
Hideriyama Suita stones are generally known for their relatively soft structure and ability to produce abundant slurry. However, this particular specimen stands out for its comparatively high density and firm, compact stone structure. Unlike softer Suita stones, which may give the sensation of the blade sinking slightly into the surface, this stone provides clear tactile feedback and stable contact between the blade and the sharpening surface, allowing for a more controlled sharpening experience.
During sharpening, it produces a rich, creamy, exceptionally fine, and uniform dark slurry that becomes almost black. With an estimated grit equivalent approaching #8000, it offers a delicate abrasive texture, a remarkably smooth sharpening feel, and excellent finishing performance. The fine slurry works evenly across the steel surface, allowing precise control over the sharpening process while gently refining both the cutting edge and bevel.
This stone is particularly well suited for achieving a delicate Kasumi finish on traditional Japanese kitchen knives. It can impart a soft, subdued appearance to the soft iron cladding (Jigane), while giving the harder steel core (Hagane) a tighter, slightly hazy luster, creating a beautiful and natural contrast between the two.
The combination of its relatively firm sharpening feel and finely textured slurry also makes it suitable for precision finishing beyond slurry-assisted polishing alone. Its responsive surface allows the user to maintain careful control over sharpening pressure and blade angle, making it an excellent choice for detailed edge refinement.
Offering an excellent balance of abrasive efficiency, smoothness, and sharpening control, this Suita provides a particularly satisfying and predictable sharpening experience.
Please note that the bottom surface is slightly uneven, which may cause the stone to wobble when placed directly on a flat surface. For safe and stable sharpening, we recommend placing it on a damp towel or securing it with a stone holder.
With its relatively dense and firm structure for a Hideriyama Suita, refined abrasive characteristics approaching #8000 grit, rich and finely textured dark slurry, and beautifully pronounced Renge patterns along its sides, this stone offers an appealing combination of practical sharpening performance and natural beauty.
A distinctive Hideriyama Renge Suita, highly recommended for delicate Kasumi finishing and final edge refinement of traditional Japanese kitchen knives.
Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured size are not accurate. This is a life time investment for people who lives sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.”
