Japanese Natural Whetstone Hirashima *Chunk* #80 / 3090g from Nagasaki Pref.

Description

This is a rare natural Hirashima-to coarse whetstone formerly quarried in Nagasaki Prefecture. Mining ended much earlier than it did for Omura-to, so very few examples remain today, making it an increasingly difficult-to-find vintage stone.

Its sharpening feel closely resembles that of Chamesuki Omura-to. Despite being a coarse stone, it has relatively smooth and predictable feedback, making it comfortable and easy to use. Its strong cutting power makes it particularly suitable for removing deep rust, repairing large chips, and reshaping blades—tasks that require the efficient removal of substantial amounts of steel.

The stone produces a generous amount of slurry during sharpening, while its abrasive particles remain relatively resistant to breaking down. As a result, its cutting action remains strong and consistent, allowing deep rust and major edge damage to be corrected efficiently in a short time.

Historically, Hirashima-to was used in the initial grinding stage immediately after a kitchen knife was forged. It was employed to establish the blade’s shape and remove the black oxide scale formed during forging. Because of its strong abrasive properties, it was also used as a deck-grinding stone to remove stains and buildup from boats.

Combining the manageable sharpening feel associated with Chamesuki Omura-to with the powerful cutting performance expected of a coarse stone, Hirashima-to is a rare natural whetstone of both considerable practical utility and historical significance.
