Japanese Natural Whetstone Vintage Nakayama Hachimai Kanmaki Daigokujo 846g Kyoto

Description

This is a vintage natural finishing whetstone quarried from the Hachimai layer of the Nakayama mine and classified as Daigokujō, a designation indicating the highest quality. It was acquired from a Japanese natural whetstone collector and is believed to have been quarried around the mid-Shōwa period.

Beautiful and distinct Kanmaki patterns appear across the sharpening surface, giving the stone the distinctive character and elegance found only in natural whetstones. Its structure is exceptionally dense and uniform, with a hardness rating of Lv. 4.5. Although hard, it engages the blade extremely well and provides a fine, precise, and sophisticated sharpening feel.

As sharpening begins, the stone produces a jet-black slurry rich in fine steel particles. The steel swarf releases from the stone’s surface remarkably quickly, helping to prevent loading and making the stone’s cutting action clearly perceptible despite its hardness. Its consistent abrasive performance and excellent tactile feedback allow the user to maintain precise control over the edge throughout the sharpening process.

Capable of producing an exceptionally keen and finely refined edge, this stone is particularly suitable for the final finishing of straight razors, Japanese woodworking tools, high-hardness steel blades, and honyaki knives. With its beautiful Kanmaki patterns, dense and uniform structure, and outstanding sharpening performance—as demonstrated by its jet-black slurry—this vintage Nakayama is both a highly practical sharpening stone and a valuable collector’s piece.

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use.These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured size are not accurate.
