This is a Hon Suita (本巣板) natural finishing whetstone from Shohonyama Okudo, Kyoto. Suitable for everything from finishing carpentry tools such as planes and chisels to sharpening kitchen knives, Okudo has long been regarded as one of Japan's most prestigious whetstone-producing areas and is often referred to by enthusiasts as the "Holy Grail" of Japanese natural sharpening stones.

This particular stone bears the designation "Daigokujō" (大極上), indicating the highest grade within the traditional quality ranking system and signifying exceptional quality and performance.

Despite its high density, the stone is not excessively hard. Instead, it offers an excellent balance of edge bite and pleasant sharpening feedback. The beautiful blend of white and beige tones across the surface further enhances its appeal.

Although relatively small and thin, the stone quickly develops the delicate dark slurry characteristic of fine Okudo stones once sharpening begins. The edge glides smoothly across the surface, creating the rich and satisfying sharpening experience for which Okudo stones are highly regarded. Before long, you may find yourself continuing to sharpen simply for the enjoyment of using the stone.

The lines visible on the sharpening surface are believed to be harmless hairline patterns (Kesuji). Slight contact may occasionally be felt during sharpening, but I do not believe they will cause scratches or damage to the edge. For the smoothest performance, I recommend generating a sufficient slurry before use.

Combining excellent sharpening performance, ease of use, and historical appeal, this is a fine Okudo whetstone that will be appreciated both as a practical tool and as a collectible example of Kyoto's natural whetstone heritage.
