This is a rare Gujo Nagura stone mined in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture.
The Gujo Nagura mines are said to have closed in the 1940s, and these stones are now extremely difficult to find even within Japan.
Gujo Nagura is said to have once been mined by farmers in Gifu as a winter side business. Before heavy snowfall made farming impossible, they would quarry the raw stone, then shape and process it during the winter months for sale. It is also said that the number of Gujo Nagura mining sites was smaller than that of Mikawa Nagura, which adds further to its rarity.
In terms of sharpening characteristics, Gujo Nagura tends to give the edge a stronger polish compared to Mikawa Nagura.
The stone with black spots has relatively thick inclusions in those areas, which may make direct sharpening somewhat unstable. For this reason, it is recommended primarily for use as a Nagura stone. The other stone, without visible patterns, is comparatively more stable and easier to use.
This is an appealing piece not only as a practical Nagura, but also as a collectible that preserves the history of natural Nagura stones.
