Japanese Natural Whetstone *Rare*Shohonyama *Hard* Otaniyama 843g Lv.5.0 Kyoto

Otaniyama is not among the most famous Japanese natural whetstone quarries. However, due to its excellent sharpening performance, it became well known within the barbering industry, where trading companies once sold Otaniyama stones directly to barbershops throughout Japan.

Otani is located approximately 10 kilometers northwest of central Kameoka City in Kyoto Prefecture. The surrounding mountains are collectively known as Otaniyama, and the quarry is believed to have reached its peak production around 1960.

At that time, the sharpness of a straight razor was directly linked to a barbershop's reputation, and professional barbers were extremely selective when choosing their sharpening stones. This particular stone was originally used by a barbershop owner who was convinced of its quality and performance.

It is well suited not only for straight razors but also for the finishing of chisels and planes.

While Otaniyama stones are generally known for their strong cutting ability and continuous slurry production, this example is exceptionally hard, approaching Lv. 5.0 on the common five-point hardness scale. Its dense and tightly consolidated structure provides a more focused sharpening feel, and it performs particularly well when used in combination with a nagura stone.

The resulting edge retains a pleasant degree of bite while remaining highly refined and practical for real-world use. It is also capable of producing a calm, elegant kasumi finish. Combining the practicality for which Otaniyama is known with the control offered by its dense stone structure, this is a highly appealing natural finishing stone.

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them is different so my measured sizes are not accurate. This is a lifetime investment for people who live sharpening their razors  and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions
