Description

Tsukinowa is a historic natural whetstone-producing area belonging to Kyoto’s renowned Higashimono (Eastern Mine) region, located south of Mt. Atago. The name is said to originate from Tsukinowa-dera, an ancient temple situated near the quarry area. The temple is believed to have been founded before the Heian period and is also known for its historical connections to the Buddhist figures Honen and Shinran.

Tsukinowa stones were once used alongside the famous Narutaki stones as finishing stones for Japanese sword polishing. They were particularly valued for their ability to remove fine sharpening scratches and produce an exceptionally refined finish.

This stone is hard, fine-grained, and possesses excellent polishing power. It refines the edge to a high level of sharpness while producing a beautiful finish, making it suitable not only for kitchen knives but also for woodworking tools such as planes and chisels.

A fine example of Kyoto's historic Higashimono tradition, this stone offers both practical performance and collectible appeal.

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured sizes are not accurate. This is a lifetime investment for people who live sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.”
