Japanese Natural Whetstone Shohonyama Aoto Lv.3.5+ 1679g from Kyoto

Description

This is a natural Kozaki Aoto whetstone.

The estimated grit is approximately #4,000–5,000. Compared to a typical Aoto, this stone is relatively dense and fine-grained while still offering excellent cutting performance and a very user-friendly sharpening experience. It also has excellent water absorption, and once thoroughly saturated, it quickly produces a fine slurry. Swarf releases easily from the surface, minimizing loading and providing a smooth, stable, and well-controlled sharpening experience throughout use.

The stone produces a well-balanced edge that combines a pleasant level of bite with refined smoothness, making it an excellent transition stone before moving on to a natural finishing stone (Awasedo).

It performs particularly well after a synthetic stone in the #1,000 grit range, where it develops the characteristic toothy edge for which Aoto stones are highly regarded. It excels in the medium-finishing to pre-finishing stages of sharpening and provides an ideal bridge to the final polishing process.

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured sizes are not accurate. This is a lifetime investment for people who live sharpening their tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.”
