This is a Nakayama Mizu Asagi, a natural finishing whetstone from Kyoto, Japan. The sharpening surface displays distinctive Kanmaki patterns, yet the stone structure remains uniform throughout, providing a stable and consistent sharpening feel during use. The stone is exceptionally hard, dense, and tightly compacted, with a relatively slow rate of water absorption. During our sharpening test, a very fine, almost jet-black slurry gradually developed after the blade was brought into contact with the sharpening surface. Despite its considerable hardness, the stone provides good blade engagement, without the sensation of the blade skating across the surface. When used without a Nagura, it produced a finish with a noticeable degree of luster. The dark slurry generated during sharpening, together with the tactile feedback transmitted through the blade, suggests that the stone performs its abrasive action effectively. Using a Nagura helps improve sharpening efficiency, although it may produce a slightly hazier finish compared with sharpening directly on the stone without slurry assistance. This Nakayama Mizu Asagi is particularly well suited for the final finishing of straight razors, where its hard, dense structure and fine abrasive characteristics can be put to excellent use. The appeal of this Nakayama Mizu Asagi lies in its combination of exceptional hardness and density, good blade engagement, the ability to generate fine slurry, and delicate, controlled abrasive performance. It is a Japanese natural finishing whetstone whose refined sharpening characteristics and stone quality can be fully appreciated through actual use. |
