This is a beautiful Shinden Shiro Suita, a natural finishing whetstone from Kyoto, Japan, characterized by its dense, fine-grained structure and excellent abrasive performance.
The sharpening surface features a pale creamy-white to soft yellowish-white base, with warm yellowish-brown and subtle orange tones appearing throughout. Delicate natural lines run across the surface, giving the stone a distinctive yet elegant appearance. When wet, the variations in color become more pronounced, revealing the rich natural character of the stone.
One of the most remarkable characteristics of this particular stone is its excellent grip on the blade despite its high density and tightly compacted structure. From the beginning of sharpening, it provides clear tactile feedback, allowing the user to maintain consistent contact between the blade and the stone. It offers a firm, controlled sharpening feel without being excessively slippery or causing the edge to catch on the surface.
During sharpening, the stone produces a rich, dark slurry that becomes almost black, demonstrating its excellent abrasive performance. The slurry works evenly across the cutting edge and bevel, allowing efficient material removal while progressively refining the steel toward a delicate, well-balanced finish.
Another particularly noteworthy feature is its excellent release of metal particles during sharpening. Metal swarf generated during the sharpening process does not readily accumulate or adhere excessively to the stone's surface, but is instead efficiently carried away by the slurry. This helps maintain consistent sharpening resistance and allows for a smooth, uninterrupted sharpening process. The ability to keep the sharpening surface relatively clean also contributes to a more predictable and comfortable sharpening experience.
The combination of excellent blade grip, a firm and responsive sharpening feel, and efficient swarf release provides outstanding control throughout the sharpening process. It allows the user to adjust pressure and sharpening angles with precision, making the stone suitable for everything from delicate edge refinement to polishing wider bevel surfaces.
This stone is particularly well suited for finishing traditional Japanese kitchen knives, allowing precise refinement of the hardened steel edge while also being effective for achieving a smooth, natural Kasumi finish on soft iron cladding. It is also suitable for finishing chisels, hand plane blades, and various other edged tools.
Its dense and compact structure, excellent blade grip, rich dark slurry, efficient swarf release, and outstanding sharpening control combine to make this a highly practical and well-balanced natural finishing whetstone.
Despite its compact size, this Shinden Shiro Suita offers an excellent combination of abrasive efficiency and delicate control, allowing the sharpener to translate precise movements and intentions into beautifully refined cutting edges.
Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured size are not accurate. This is a life time investment for people who live sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.”
