Japanese Natural Whetstone Shohonyama Takao Suita 30' Size 856g

Description

This is a Takao Suita natural finishing whetstone, originating from Takao, one of Kyoto’s traditional natural whetstone-producing areas.

Takao is one of the historically recognized sources of Kyoto natural whetstones. Suita stones, characterized by their distinctive layered structure and excellent abrasive properties, have long been used in Japan for sharpening and finishing a wide variety of edged tools, including kitchen knives, Japanese planes (Kanna), and chisels (Nomi).

This particular specimen features a beautifully distinctive appearance, with yellowish-brown to reddish-rust-colored Su (natural pores and inclusions characteristic of Suita stones) scattered across a pale grayish-white to subtly bluish-gray surface. The sharpening face displays numerous Su markings of varying sizes, accompanied by delicate black patterns and fine natural lines reminiscent of geological formations.

Along the sides, intricate layers transition from white to pale ochre, revealing the stone’s natural sedimentary structure. These complex colors and patterns, formed over an immense period of geological time, contribute to the unique beauty and character of this individual stone.

One of the most remarkable characteristics of this whetstone is its ability to produce slurry almost immediately, combined with the firm, refined sharpening feel of a dense, tightly structured Suita.

As soon as sharpening begins, a fine, dark black slurry develops rapidly, demonstrating the stone’s excellent abrasive action. Unlike the thick, creamy slurry commonly associated with softer whetstones, the slurry produced by this specimen is relatively thin, fluid, and free-flowing.

This lightweight slurry moves naturally between the blade and the sharpening surface, preventing excessive resistance and allowing for a smooth, comfortable sharpening experience.

At the same time, the stone itself possesses a dense, compact structure that provides the distinctive firm and controlled sharpening feel of a well-consolidated Suita. Despite its ability to generate slurry quickly, the stone does not feel excessively soft. Instead, its sharpening surface maintains a satisfying degree of firmness and stability, providing reliable feedback and support throughout the sharpening process.

During sharpening, a slight difference in surface texture may occasionally be felt between the Su areas and the surrounding stone. However, these variations do not cause scratches on the blade surface.

This balance between rapid slurry formation and a dense, tightly structured stone body is one of the most appealing qualities of this particular specimen. It offers the lively, effortless sharpening sensation of a thin, free-flowing black slurry while retaining the precise blade feedback characteristic of a dense Suita.

This whetstone is well suited for finishing a variety of edged tools, including kitchen knives, Japanese planes, and chisels. In addition to refining cutting edges, it also offers excellent potential for producing a beautiful, natural Kasumi finish, enhancing the visual contrast between the softer iron cladding (Jigane) and the hardened steel cutting core (Hagane).

A beautiful grayish-white surface decorated with yellowish-brown Su markings, intricate natural layering, rapidly developing black slurry with a light and fluid consistency, and the firm, refined sharpening sensation of a dense Suita.

Combining all these distinctive characteristics, this Takao Suita is an attractive natural finishing whetstone that offers both practical sharpening performance and remarkable visual appeal.

It is an excellent choice not only for sharpeners who appreciate the unique characteristics of Kyoto natural whetstones, but also for collectors who value the individuality and natural beauty of traditional Japanese sharpening stones.

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured sizes are not accurate. This is a lifetime investment for people who live sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.”
