Description

This is a Okunomon Aka Pin, a natural finishing stone from the renowned Okunomon area in Kyoto. Its pale yellowish-brown base is accented by beautiful reddish tones, giving the stone a distinctive natural appearance.

We particularly recommend this stone for creating a Kasumi finish on the soft iron cladding (jigane) of traditional Japanese knives.

The fine abrasive particles characteristic of Aka Pin gradually refine the remaining scratches on the jigane, while bringing out a pleasing contrast between the soft iron cladding and the harder steel core. It is well suited to producing a calm, traditional Kasumi finish.

Rather than creating a highly reflective, mirror-like polish, this stone is particularly suitable for achieving a soft, even Kasumi texture while preserving the natural character of the jigane.

Depending on the steel, the condition of the surface, and the preceding sharpening steps, the final appearance can also be adjusted by controlling the amount of slurry and water on the stone.

Recommended for those who appreciate the distinctive sharpening feel of Japanese natural stones and wish to achieve a traditional Kasumi finish that brings out the natural texture and character of the jigane.

Please note: Natural layer cracks can be seen on the sharpening surface. We recommend monitoring these areas carefully while using the stone.
