Japanese Natural Whetstone Umajiyama Vintage Renge Suita '80' Size 504g
Description

Please check the photos. This is a vintage Umajiyama Renge Suita natural finishing whetstone originating from Kyoto, Japan. It is suitable for the final sharpening and refinement of various edged tools, including Japanese kitchen knives, woodworking planes (Kanna), and chisels (Nomi).

Umajiyama is known as one of Kyoto's traditional sources of natural finishing whetstones. The quarry has long since closed, and most Umajiyama stones currently available on the market originate from old stock quarried many years ago. This particular specimen is also a vintage stone that was quarried and distributed in an earlier period, making it an increasingly difficult type of Japanese natural whetstone to obtain.

One of the most distinctive characteristics of this specimen is its relatively high density, compact and well-consolidated stone structure, and ability to produce a fine, uniform slurry during sharpening.

Suita-layer whetstones are generally known for their excellent slurry-producing properties and effective abrasive performance. However, this particular Umajiyama Renge Suita stands out for its relatively dense structure, which provides a stable and controlled sharpening surface. Unlike excessively soft stones that may feel somewhat unstable during sharpening, this specimen offers a firmer yet smooth contact with the blade, resulting in a comfortable and consistent sharpening experience.

During sharpening, it produces a remarkably fine and uniform slurry, allowing the cutting edge to be progressively refined while maintaining excellent abrasive performance. The balance between fine abrasive particles and a stable sharpening surface helps reduce sharpening scratches and develop a precise, well-refined cutting edge.

Its moderately firm and well-consolidated structure also provides consistent sharpening feedback, allowing the user to maintain good control over the blade throughout the sharpening process. This combination of effective cutting ability and fine finishing characteristics is one of the most appealing qualities of this stone.

For Japanese kitchen knives, it is capable of producing a keen cutting edge with a desirable degree of bite, offering an excellent balance between sharpness and practical cutting performance. It is also well suited for Kasumi finishing, helping bring out the natural contrast between the softer Jigane (iron cladding) and the harder Hagane (cutting steel), creating the distinctive appearance associated with traditional Japanese blades.

Another remarkable feature of this specimen is its beautiful natural coloration and the distinctive patterns characteristic of Renge Suita whetstones.

The sharpening surface displays warm yellowish-brown and golden tones, interspersed with delicate pale grayish-white patterns and fine reddish-purple to brown speckles. These naturally occurring colors and markings blend together to create a rich and attractive appearance, reflecting the unique geological characteristics of Japanese natural whetstones.

The Japanese character 「敬」 (Kei) preserved on the sharpening surface is a historical marking dating back to the time of the grandfather of the current representative of Tanaka Whetstone, a long-established Kyoto whetstone dealer.

This marking provides an interesting connection to an earlier period of the traditional Kyoto natural whetstone trade and adds historical significance to the specimen.

The preservation of such an old marking is another appealing characteristic of vintage Japanese natural whetstones, distinguishing them from more recently distributed examples.

Its relatively high density, firm and well-consolidated stone structure, fine and uniform slurry production, excellent abrasive performance, and beautiful natural Renge patterns are the defining characteristics of this Umajiyama Renge Suita.

In addition to being a highly practical natural finishing whetstone with excellent sharpening characteristics, this specimen is also a collectible piece of Kyoto's traditional natural whetstone heritage, distinguished by its beautiful Renge patterns and the historical 「敬」 marking preserved on its surface.

Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured size are not accurate. This is a life time investment for people who lives sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.””
