Japanese Natural Whetstone Vintage Mikawa Koma Nagura 146g w/ Kokusai Bunka Box

This is a vintage Koma Nagura from the Showa era, acquired from a collector in Japan. One side bears a “Kokusai Bunka” stamp, believed to be associated with a barbering and beauty education institution.

The stamp may be connected to today’s Kokusai Bunka Technical College of Hairdesign, which was founded in 1953 as the Kokusai Bunka School of Barbering and Beauty. This Nagura may therefore have been kept and used for razor-sharpening practice or technical instruction at the school. However, as its provenance cannot be conclusively established from the stamp alone, this historical background should be regarded as a reasonable possibility rather than a confirmed fact.

The stone also bears signs of having been flattened, most likely by a student at the time. Interestingly, a surface other than the actual sharpening face was flattened, possibly as part of a practical exercise in learning how to prepare and maintain sharpening stones. These marks offer a fascinating glimpse into barbering education and razor-sharpening practice during the Showa era.

The stone offers the effective abrasive power and progressive particle breakdown expected of a quality Koma Nagura, making it suitable for the finishing stages of sharpening razors and other edged tools. In addition to its practical performance, it is a particularly interesting vintage Nagura for collectors who appreciate the history of traditional barbering education and sharpening culture in Japan.
