Japanese Natural Whetstone Vintage Saijo - Ken Mikawa Nagura 228g from Aichi Pref.

This is a rare vintage Mejiro Nagura bearing the “Saijo Ken” inspection stamp. It was selected and distributed during the Showa era, when Mikawa Nagura mining and trade were at their peak. This stone was acquired from a collector in Japan. It is marked “S43,” indicating that the previous owner obtained this Nagura in Showa 43 (1968).

Alongside Mr. Yagi, Mr. Saijo was a pioneering figure who contributed significantly to the distribution of Mikawa Nagura by assessing its quality and promoting an understanding of its characteristics and applications. He is regarded as one of the individuals who helped develop the quality assessment and layer classification of Mikawa Nagura before today’s well-known Asano-stamped appraisal and classification system was established, preceding the time of Mr. Sakamoto’s father at Asano. The “Saijo Ken” stamp is therefore a valuable testament to the history of Nagura selection and distribution during that period.

Compared with the Asano-stamped Mejiro Nagura available today, this vintage stone has a somewhat softer character. It responds readily when a blade is applied and produces a high-quality slurry. As sharpening progresses, the abrasive particles gradually break down into finer particles, maintaining a suitable level of cutting power while producing a smooth, refined edge.

In addition to its practical sharpening performance, this Showa-era Mejiro Nagura is highly recommended for those interested in experiencing the history of Mikawa Nagura and its traditional appraisal culture.
