Mint Japanese Wakasa Lacquerware Chopsticks 2 pairs Kaga & Nishijin Design 084

Wakasa Lacquerware
Wakasa-nuri is a type of lacquerware made in and around Obama, Fukui Prefecture. It is said to have originated in the early Edo period when an official craftsman of the Obama clan, whose territory was located near Wakasa Bay, drew a design of the beautiful seabed.
Wakasa Bay is a rias coast with several narrow bays and is a picturesque place with many scenic spots, including Amanohashidate, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, and Kehi Matsubara, one of the three most beautiful pine groves in Japan.
Wakasa lacquerware is characterised by the use of the 'togidashi' technique, in which patterns are made with eggshells, shells and pine leaves, and then coated with lacquer and polished. As a result, the lacquerware has a unique style and dignity among lacquerware, and is highly prized as a work of art. Because of their resistance to water and heat, they are also popular as daily necessities, and Wakasa lacquered chopsticks account for a large proportion of all lacquered chopsticks produced in Japan. Another attraction of Wakasa-nuri is that the entire process is carried out by a single craftsman, rather than a division of labour, so the individuality of each craftsman is strongly expressed.
