This is an Ashitani finishing stone acquired from a domestic collector in Japan.
It is a well-preserved piece that still retains its original label and stamps, adding to its rarity and appeal.
The stone features a calm yellow-green base with subtle variations in tone, creating a natural and understated pattern characteristic of Ashitani. While not flashy, it offers a quiet depth and refined texture, combining aesthetic charm with strong practical performance.
The stone is on the softer side, with excellent abrasive release and very smooth slurry development. It provides a gentle, easy-to-control sharpening feel, making it accessible even for those new to natural stones, while still delivering solid cutting performance.
The finish is a smooth, moist kasumi, with a natural contrast between jigane and hagane. The resulting edge balances a silky feel with a satisfying bite, making it well suited for the final finishing of Japanese kitchen knives.
Compared to Ohira stones—known for their softness, visual beauty, and expressive kasumi finishes—Ashitani stones emphasize ease of use, consistency, and practical performance. Rather than visual flamboyance, they are valued for their stable and reliable sharpening characteristics.
Thanks to the well-balanced combination of smoothness and cutting ability, this stone is also suitable not only for kitchen knives, but for straight razors and woodworking tools as well.
The patterns and color variations seen on the surface are natural characteristics of this stone and do not affect performance. Overall, this is a high-quality piece offering excellent consistency and usability.
Recommended for those who prioritize performance and ease of use over visual flamboyance, or for anyone seeking a reliable and practical finishing stone.
Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured sizes are not accurate. This is a lifetime investment for people who live sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.”
