This is a highly distinctive Wakasa Shiki-Tomae Asagi natural whetstone, suitable for everything from regular kitchen knife sharpening to the final finishing stages of straight razors. Daigokujō (大極上) is a traditional Japanese grading term meaning the highest quality grade, reserved for stones considered superior in overall performance and quality."
Wakasa stones were quarried in Fukui Prefecture, adjacent to Kyoto, and have long been highly regarded by natural whetstone enthusiasts. They are known for offering a sharpening feel that differs from Kyoto finishing stones while still producing a calm, refined slurry and maintaining excellent cutting performance. As a result, they are capable of creating a natural and elegant kasumi finish on a wide variety of blades.
This particular stone was acquired through a professional dealer-to-dealer transaction and appears to have been quarried many decades ago. The stone exhibits a remarkably uniform and consistent structure throughout. Its subdued yellow-green to gray-green coloration conveys the quiet elegance often associated with high-quality Wakasa stones. The reverse side still retains its natural skin and quarry scenery in excellent condition, allowing the owner to appreciate the aesthetic beauty unique to natural whetstones.
In use, the stone is dense yet possesses a pleasant degree of softness and cushioning, resulting in an exceptionally smooth sharpening feel. The slurry produced is extremely fine and delicate, gently refining the edge while enhancing the contrast between the hagane and jigane. For this reason, it is particularly well suited for those seeking refined kasumi finishes. It performs beautifully not only with kitchen knives but also with straight razors and woodworking tools.
Over the years, our shop has handled many Wakasa stones, most of which were relatively hard examples believed to have come from the later mining period. Although the exact quarrying period of this stone is unknown, I consider it to be among the finer examples of Wakasa stones that I have encountered. In my opinion, its sharpening performance and finishing quality have the potential to rival older Higashimono (Eastern Kyoto) finishing stones.
Please note that these are not for beginner sharpeners since they're harder to use. These are natural stones meaning that every single one of them are different so my measured size are not accurate. This is a life time investment for people who lives sharpening their knives and tools, do not hesitate to ask me your questions.””Dimension : 57-80mm×118-139mm×18-26mm ( Approx.)
